Why GPR Is the Industry Standard
The Only Non-Destructive Method for Post-Tension Cables
Post-tension cables are the highest-risk embedded element in any concrete structure. Covermeters cannot reliably detect them. Visual inspection cannot see them. The only safe, non-destructive method to locate PT cables is GPR scanning. This alone makes GPR mandatory for any work on PT slabs.
A 3D Subsurface Map, Not Just a Single Reading
Traditional rebar locators give a single reading at a single point. GPR scanning creates a complete subsurface map of all embedded elements across the entire scan area — showing location, depth, and spacing in 3D. This is incomparably more useful for planning safe drill and cut locations.
Detects Everything, Not Just Metal
GPR detects metallic and non-metallic elements — including plastic conduits, ceramic tiles, voids, delaminations, and honeycombing. Covermeters only respond to metal. GPR provides a complete picture of what's inside the concrete.
Works to 600mm Depth
Standard covermeters lose accuracy beyond 80–100mm. GPR scanning penetrates to 600mm+ — covering the full depth of even the thickest commercial slabs and walls, including multiple reinforcement layers.
GPR vs Traditional Methods — FAQs
No — standard covermeter/pachometer devices cannot reliably differentiate post-tension cables from rebar. They also provide no depth map and cannot detect conduits or voids. GPR is the only non-destructive method that can confidently locate and map post-tension cables.
